A capricious not-cat with a terrible temper. Known for being a bit of a flirt, Amberbug will try to charm someone one moment, then decide they said something wrong and challenge them to a brawl in the very next. Because she is wild and unpredictable, a lot of not-cats are fascinated with her and want to uncover the mysterious depths of her being ... only to find that Amberbug truly has no idea what she's doing, either.
She doesn't have any real hobbies or any social groups she feels like she truly belongs to. Starting trouble and making problems seems to be the only way she knows how to pass the time. It is possible she genuinely wants to forge close connections with others, but since she has a lot of big feelings she doesn't know how to manage, it's kind of hard to tell.

Amberbug grew up in Little Respite alongside her littermates, Ashrain and Chobani. The three of them were reknowned throughout the town for causing boatloads of mischief, with Amberbug as the leader and driving force behind their many naughty little misdeeds. Ashrain and Amberbug often butted heads, however, and Chobani was never overly invested in their little crime sprees in the first place, so to Amberbug's great distress, as the three grew older, they began to grow apart. While her littermates became closer with the other not-cats around them and pursued their individual interests, Amberbug was left behind, the queen of an empty castle, with only the memories of their many adventures together to keep her company. Although she was aware she hadn't always been the kindest to her littermates, she had never once expected to be left behind, either. Seeing them move on while she remained the same broke her little heart, and she began to start trouble more and more often, figuring that negative attention was better than no attention at all.
During childhood, Amberbug had also been close with Specter, with whom she had pulled off countless schemes. Sadly, as Amberbug grew distant from her littermates, she tried to latch on to Specter instead, and her mood swings and bossy demeanor made it upset. Specter didn't know how to handle either Amberbug's hurt feelings or its own, so it started avoiding her instead.
Specter was soon approached by Moldspore, a kitten slightly younger than itself, who thought Specter was incredibly cool. Seeing an opportunity to make a new friend, Specter started spending time with Moldspore instead, and the two got into loads of fun trouble together ... not least of all trying to keep Moldspore away from a very jealous Amberbug.
In young adulthood, Amberbug went traveling for the very first time together with all of her same-aged friends from childhood - her littermates, Specter, Chicken Jr., Princess, Marble, Garden and Frostmorn. As the little group set out to explore all the mysteries of Nestor's Wood together, they got to know both each other and themselves as independent adults. Amberbug was very touched when she realized that even though she had always been hard on the others, they all still considered her a friend, even when she was at her most difficult. Most everyone in the group wished she would just calm down a little bit so they could bury the hatchet and be buddies.
Though Amberbug's friendship with Specter remained complicated throughout their travels, she was surprised to find herself spending much of the journey together with Chicken Jr.. As children, the two of them had quarreled many a time, and Chicken Jr. had always had quite a personal rivalry with Ashrain, but now that Amberbug and Ashrain were a little more distant from one another and all the silly little kitten wars of times past felt further away, it turned out they got along surprisingly well. Amberbug's rivalry with Garden also softened further and grew more playful, to the point where some wondered if something more was going on between the two.
Finally, someone who was very insistent on reconnecting with Amberbug was Ashrain. Despite clearly still being a little mad about how she'd behaved throughout their adolescence, ae still sat her down and told her that even though things were different now, she would always be one of the not-cats closest to aer heart, and ae would always want to see her happy. - Ashrain: Amberbug's littermate. The two of them have a tendency to butt heads and get on each other's nerves, but deep down, they care for each other a great deal. It seems Amberbug may be a little jealous of Ashrain for having aer life all figured out, while she's a bit of a hot mess herself. Ashrain just thinks it's annoying that Amberbug is always acting out for attention, when really ae thinks ae deserves lots of attention for much better reasons!
- Chobani: Amberbug's other littermate. Although Chobani always treats Amberbug with kindness, she is no longer the center of their world, which is enough to upset her, since deep down, them and Ashrain are still the center of hers. Chobani is still holding out hope that Amberbug will eventually calm down enough to see that their own independence and their love for her are not in competition, but rather two sides of the same coin.
- Specter: Amberbug's first friend outside of her littermates. Though they were dear to one another when they were little, they grew apart during adolescence. Amberbug still wants to reclaim Specter as her best friend, but Specter refuses to tolerate the way she treats it when she's upset, or the way she tries to control how Specter spends its time, so their friendship is on very thin ice.
- Moldspore: One of the younger kittens, whom Specter has befriended. Amberbug is furious with Moldspore for stealing Specter away from her, and if she finds them hanging out together, she will be sure to ruin their fun in any way she can. Moldspore doesn't understand what's going on. Ae finds Amberbug more than a little scary.
- Garden: Amberbug's rival since childhood. When they were little, Amberbug used to envy Garden's popularity, while Garden disliked Amberbug for being rude and causing mischief. However, over time, their dislike has softened a great deal, as they've both realized that the other has struggled with loneliness, and how much they have in common at the end of the day. Garden is one of the not-cats Amberbug tends to flirt with the most, but Garden has feelings for someone else, so ae politely turns her down each time ... Although ae would be lying if ae said ae didn't feel some sort of way about aer childhood nemesis.
- Rogue and Melba: Amberbug's parents. Though she has a tendency to yell at them whenever she's upset, they know she only lashes out because she's sad, so they don't take it personally. The two of them make Amberbug feel safe and loved like no one else does, so she often comes home to find comfort with her parents, just as she would when she was a kitten. Melba sometimes worries for Amberbug's future, but Rogue is certain she will find her path in life eventually - all she needs is love and support during this little rough patch on the way.
