The nickname was so kindly bestowed upon him by his successor (they don't like each other).
(Also I've just now realised that that was actually quite an ironic moment because the 3rd Doctor was played by Jon Pertwee, who, aside from Doctor Who, was also famous for playing a scarecrow in the children's TV show Worzel Gummidge. So that moment was someone who played a scarecrow calling someone else Scarecrow and I just think intentional or not that's really funny.)
"Well, this is gay!"
"Oh my giddy aunt!"
JAMIE: Doctor, come on, will ye? The whole place is going to blow up.
DOCTOR: Oh, it's quite all right, Jamie. The planet is quite safe. There's just going to be a localised volcanic eruption. It'll only affect the island.
JAMIE: Maybe so, but we happen to be on the island.
DOCTOR: Oh, my word!
"Just one small question. Why do you want to blow up the world?"
"There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things! Things which act against everything we believe in. They must be fought!"
DOCTOR: Jamie, I'm being stared at. Is there something wrong with me?
JAMIE: You mean up here, Doctor?
(Points at his head)
DOCTOR: Is my hair in disarray?
JAMIE: Well, no more than usual.
DOCTOR: Do I look strange or bizarre?
JAMIE: Aye. Well maybe I'm just used to you.
DOCTOR: That's some comfort.
(If that isn't the most old married couple conversation ever..)
JAMIE: Well, we can't stay here. We'll be buried by that lava. It's nearly on us. Look!
DOCTOR: Oh, my word, what a wonderful sight.
ZOE: Fantastic.
JAMIE: Listen, will you two stop gaping at that and get us out of here.
DOCTOR: Don't worry, Jamie. We're safe in the Tardis.
JAMIE: Are you sure?
DOCTOR: Well..
JAMIE: I mean, has the Tardis ever been buried up to its neck in lava before?
DOCTOR: Well, no.
JAMIE: Well, how can you be so sure we're going to be all right?
DOCTOR: Well perhaps...
Villain: You've caused me a great deal of trouble!
Doctor: Good!
"Our lives are different to anybody else's. That's the exciting thing. There's nobody in the universe can do what we're doing!"
DOCTOR: Let me do the talking. All you have to do is to stand in the background, and admire my diplomatic skills.
a few moments later
DOCTOR: How is it you can be such a stupid, stubborn, irrational, and thoroughly objectionable old idiot?
(Jamie nearly laughs)
DOCTOR: And what are you smiling at?
JAMIE: I'm just admiring your diplomatic skills.
